October Brings Pumpkins, Costumes & Fall Traditions

October around Lavon means cooler evenings, Halloween costumes, fall festivals, and plenty of opportunities to spend a Saturday outside. Families, couples, and pet owners can find seasonal events throughout the surrounding area, from community celebrations in Wylie to one of Richardson's longest-running fall festivals.

Meet the Neighbors at National Night Out

Wylie's National Night Out gives residents an early-month opportunity to connect with the surrounding community. The annual event centers on neighborhood involvement and provides a more community-focused way to kick off the fall season before Halloween festivities take over the calendar.

Spend a Fall Weekend at Huffhines Harvest Fest

Head to Richardson for Huffhines Harvest Fest, a two-day celebration featuring local makers, live music, food, fall treats, and family activities. Pumpkin decorating, a scarecrow village, a petting zoo, and other seasonal activities give families plenty to explore, while the marketplace provides an opportunity to shop from local artisans. Pet owners can even check out Pawtoberfest, which includes dog-focused vendors, a pet costume contest, and other activities.

Trick-or-Treat Through Downtown Wylie at Boo on Ballard

Historic Downtown Wylie turns into a Halloween destination for Boo on Ballard in October. More than 80 local merchants and nonprofits are expected to participate in trick-or-treating along Ballard Avenue, while Olde City Park hosts Glow in the Park with additional activities. The event also includes a trunk-or-treat and a sensory-friendly area, making it an especially strong recommendation for families living near Lavon.

Make a Day of Local Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes

Nothing says October quite like picking out pumpkins and spending an afternoon on the farm. A short drive from Lavon brings residents to several seasonal destinations around Rockwall where families can trade an ordinary weekend for hayrides, farm animals, fall photos, and plenty of pumpkins.

At Blase Family Farm in Rockwall, visitors can take a hayride through the property, meet llamas, sheep, donkeys, and pigs at the petting zoo, navigate a kid-friendly hay maze, and follow the wooded Spookley the Square Pumpkin story trail. The farm also offers plenty of fall photo opportunities and pumpkins to bring home. Reservations are required for visits during pumpkin season.

Another Rockwall option is Huddin Homestead Fun Farm. The family farm is known for its collection of friendly and exotic animals, making it another option for families looking to turn pumpkin picking into a larger fall outing. For pumpkins even closer to home, check out The Vine Shack in Lavon for its seasonal pumpkin offerings.

For a true corn-maze experience, residents may need to venture a little farther from Lavon. North Texas has several larger fall farms built around corn mazes, pumpkin patches, hayrides, and other harvest activities, making them worth considering when you have a full fall day to explore.

November Is Made for Markets, Makers & Holiday Shopping

As Halloween decorations come down, the holiday-shopping season starts picking up across North Texas. November is a great time to get ahead on gifts while supporting local makers, boutiques, and small businesses at seasonal markets throughout Wylie and Plano.

Shop Small at Local Fall & Holiday Markets

Historic Downtown Wylie provides a particularly good setting for finding gifts outside the typical shopping center. For example, the Uncorked Artisan Market brings handmade goods, boutique finds, jewelry, treats, candles, home décor, and other products from local businesses to downtown Wylie.

Find One-of-a-Kind Gifts at the John Paul II Christmas Bazaar

The John Paul II High School Christmas Bazaar in Plano brings together more than 160 vendors for one of the area's larger seasonal shopping events. Holiday décor, jewelry, clothing, children's gifts, food, beauty products, and home décor make it easy to tackle several names on your shopping list in one trip. Admission and parking are free, making this an approachable outing for Lavon residents ready to get into the Christmas spirit.

Turn Holiday Shopping into a Day Out in Plano

For a holiday shopping trip with plenty to explore, Plano gives Lavon residents another reason to make a day of it. The Plano Holiday Market at Carpenter Park Recreation Center brings together local vendors offering handmade and seasonal items, giving shoppers an opportunity to find gifts outside the usual retail stores. The event is free to attend and provides an easy stop for browsing locally made finds while getting a head start on holiday shopping.

The market also takes place the same day as the John Paul II Christmas Bazaar, making it possible to visit two seasonal shopping events in one trip to Plano. Browse local vendors, pick up a few gifts, stop for lunch or dinner, and enjoy a full day of holiday shopping before heading home to Lavon.

December Lights Up with Christmas Traditions Near Lavon

By December, communities surrounding Lavon are fully in holiday mode. Christmas markets, parades, tree lightings, festive downtown districts, and seasonal shopping create plenty of opportunities to build traditions close to home. Residents can plan an entire weekend around the festivities or simply head out for an evening of lights and holiday atmosphere.

Browse the Wylie Arts Festival & Victorian Christmas Market

Historic Downtown Wylie hosts the Wylie Arts Festival, where visitors can shop for art, handmade crafts, unique gifts, and festive foods. Its downtown setting makes it easy to combine holiday shopping with dining and exploring local businesses along Ballard Avenue.

Welcome Christmas at Wylie's Parade & Tree Lighting

Historic Downtown Wylie gets into the Christmas spirit with its annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting, bringing families and neighbors together for one of the area's favorite holiday traditions. Festive floats make their way through downtown during the parade before the celebration continues with the lighting of Wylie's Christmas tree, creating an evening filled with lights and plenty of seasonal cheer.

The celebration pairs especially well with the Wylie Arts Festival, giving Lavon residents another reason to spend part of the weekend exploring nearby Wylie. Browse handmade gifts and local vendors at the festival, then return for the parade and tree lighting to round out a festive weekend close to home.

Celebrate Christmas on the Square

Downtown Garland transforms for Christmas on the Square, a festive evening filled with holiday traditions for the whole family. The celebration begins with the city's Christmas tree lighting and continues with live music, visits with Santa, real reindeer, a snow hill, train rides, artisan crafts, and plenty of Christmas lights throughout Downtown Garland Square.

Make an evening of it by grabbing dinner or a seasonal treat from one of the downtown restaurants and food vendors before exploring the festivities. With activities for children, local shopping, and plenty of opportunities for holiday photos, Christmas on the Square gives Lavon residents another nearby way to celebrate the season without heading into Dallas.

Bring Home the Perfect Christmas Tree

Picking out the Christmas tree can be just as much a part of the holiday tradition as decorating it. Lavon residents can make a day of the experience at nearby North Texas tree farms, where rows of evergreens, hayrides, seasonal treats, and family activities offer a festive alternative to picking up a tree from a traditional retail lot.

At KaJiN Christmas Tree Farm in Caddo Mills, families can head into the field to choose and cut their own Christmas tree or select a fresh pre-cut Fraser fir from North Carolina. The farm adds plenty to the experience with hayrides, visits with a miniature horse, a children's train, an outdoor grill, and a Christmas store filled with decorations. Santa is also scheduled to visit throughout the 2026 season, which begins the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Also in Caddo Mills, 4 CeeSons Tree Farm offers another traditional choose-and-cut experience with Texas-grown Virginia pines, Carolina Sapphire, Leyland cypress, and Blue Ice trees in its fields, along with pre-cut Fraser firs brought in from North Carolina. Visitors can also browse wreaths, garlands, gifts, and seasonal items while enjoying the farm's picnic area and refreshments.

For families ready to venture a little farther, Kadee Christmas Tree Farm in Greenville turns tree hunting into a larger holiday outing. The longtime family farm offers choose-and-cut Virginia pines and imported firs along with hayrides, an animal barn, gift shop, fire pit, play areas, and seasonal photo opportunities. Its Walking Trail of Lights has also become part of the farm's Christmas season, giving visitors another reason to stay after finding the tree that will become the centerpiece of their holiday celebrations.

Make Your Holiday Shopping List a Little More Local

Holiday shopping near Lavon extends well beyond online orders and big-box stores. Nearby Wylie, Rockwall, Garland, and Plano give residents access to everything from historic downtown boutiques and local makers to major shopping centers where you can tackle an entire gift list in one trip. Mixing local shopping with larger retail destinations also makes it easy to find something for everyone without traveling deep into Dallas.

Find Something Unique in Historic Downtown Wylie

For gifts with a little more local character, start in Historic Downtown Wylie, where Ballard Avenue is lined with independent businesses in a walkable downtown setting. Browse the district for specialty gifts, clothing, décor, and other locally sourced finds, then stop for coffee or a meal while you are there. The downtown area also hosts several of Wylie's seasonal events, making it easy to combine holiday shopping with the Wylie Arts Festival, Christmas festivities, or a weekend market.

For residents at Cottages at Lake Lavon, Downtown Wylie is especially useful for those smaller gifts that can be harder to find at major retailers. It also gives you an opportunity to support businesses in the surrounding community while turning your shopping trip into part of the holiday experience.

Cross Off Your List Around Rockwall

For a holiday shopping trip with plenty of local character, spend an afternoon exploring Historic Downtown Rockwall. The walkable district surrounding the square is home to independent boutiques and specialty stores where you can find clothing, jewelry, home décor, accessories, and gifts that feel a little more personal than the usual big-box finds.

Stop by Lyla's Clothing & Gifts for candles, jewelry, handbags, self-care items, Texas-themed gifts, home décor, and stocking stuffers, or browse J10 Boutique for women's clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes, and gifts from brands like Free People, Beyond Yoga, and Pistola. Other downtown stops include Poe & Arrows, Groovy's, Simply Kate, and Karen & Co. Jewelry, giving you several places to browse without traveling across town.

Once the shopping bags start filling up, take a break at one of the restaurants or cafés surrounding the square before heading back to Lavon. Downtown Rockwall also hosts seasonal shopping traditions like its Holiday Open House and Shop Small Saturday, making the district an especially fitting stop when you want to support local businesses while working through your Christmas list.

Find Plenty Under One Roof at Firewheel Town Center

When you have several people left on your list, Firewheel Town Center in Garland gives you considerably more variety in one destination. The open-air shopping center includes Barnes & Noble for books and gifts, James Avery Jewelry for something more personal, Build-A-Bear Workshop for younger family members, Ulta Beauty for beauty and self-care gifts, and retailers like Dillard's, Macy's, Old Navy, White House Black Market, and J. Crew Factory.

Because Firewheel combines shopping, restaurants, and entertainment, it also works well for a longer holiday outing. Finish your list, grab dinner nearby, or catch a movie at AMC Firewheel 18 before heading back to Lavon.

Go Big on Gifting at Legacy West & The Shops at Legacy

For the biggest shopping day of the season, Plano's Legacy West and The Shops at Legacy put a wide range of gift options within the same district. At Legacy West, you can browse Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tory Burch, Coach, Sephora, West Elm, Madewell, Nike, Tecovas, Lululemon, and Free People, giving you options for everyone from the fashion lover to the person refreshing their home.

Nearby, The Shops at Legacy adds boutiques and recognizable names like Kendra Scott, Francesca's, Urban Outfitters, Ella Bleu, and Joni's Boutique. With more than 35 restaurants also located throughout The Shops at Legacy, this is the destination I'd position as the full holiday-shopping day: arrive with a list, browse both districts, stop for lunch, and make an outing of getting those final gifts checked off.
